[Silo Functionnality](https://help.silex.legal/en/knowledge-base/security-privacy?hsLang=en#silo-functionnality) # Restricting a folder to a group or a person in SharePoint by Silex ## Remove access for everyone, then grant it to an office group or a single person: the exact procedure, and the pitfall of the Silex Visitors group. Only the account holder, as owner of the site, can restrict a folder. The procedure is the same for an office folder, a confidential matter or a personal space. ### How do I restrict an office folder to its group? - On the folder, click … then Manage access, and open the Groups tab. You see the three default groups: Silex Owners (Owner), Silex Visitors (Can view) and Silex Members (Can edit). - Click Silex Members. Under the group's access methods, select No direct access, then Apply. SharePoint then automatically stops the folder inheriting the site's permissions: it now has its own. - Do exactly the same for Silex Visitors. - Only Silex Owners remains. Do not remove it: it is what lets you keep control of the folder. - Click the Grant access icon (the person with a +, at the top of the panel), type the group name — "Geneva office" — choose the level with the pencil icon (Can edit), then click Grant access. Untick Notify people if you do not want an email to be sent. - Check the Groups tab: it should show Silex Owners and Geneva office, and nothing else. Subfolders of the office folder — such as the office's shared folder — inherit this setting: nothing to do on them. ### Why must I also remove Silex Visitors? Removing Silex Members is not enough. As long as Silex Visitors keeps its access, all its members can still view the folder. Even if this group is empty today, remove it: anyone added later as a visitor would otherwise see the folder. ### The panel says "Direct access: none" but the group can still edit. Is that normal? Yes. When you open a group, SharePoint first shows "Direct access: none" while the group "can edit". It only means the group's access comes from the site. What matters is to select the No direct access option and click Apply. ### How do I create a personal space? Inside an office folder, the personal space has inherited the office's permissions: its Groups tab shows Silex Owners and the office group. - On the personal space, open Manage access → Groups, click the office group, select No direct access and Apply. - Click Grant access, type the person's name, choose Can edit and confirm. - Check: the Groups tab only shows Silex Owners, and the People tab shows the person. Everything that person uploads to their space is then automatically visible to them alone. As owner of the site, the account holder can restore access at any time. ### How do I restrict a confidential matter? Same method: remove the office group and grant access to the people on the matter — or to a dedicated group if the team is stable. ### How do I check a folder is properly restricted? Open Manage access on each restricted folder: neither Silex Members nor Silex Visitors should appear in the Groups tab. Then ask a member to test: they should see their office and their own space, not those of others. Allow about 30 minutes for Silex to apply the changes. ### What does the account holder see?
